Lorem ipsum generator
Generate placeholder text — paragraphs, sentences or words — for mockups and layouts. Copy with one click.
What this Lorem ipsum generator does
The generator produces random placeholder text in three units, paragraphs, sentences or words, from 1 to 100 of them, optionally starting with the classic “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” lead. Sentences vary between 6 and 14 words and paragraphs between 3 and 6 sentences, so the output has the natural rhythm of real prose rather than a repeated block. Every word comes from the original 69-word passage, which keeps the result looking like the Lorem ipsum people expect instead of a random Latin dictionary.
How to use it
- Choose a Unit: paragraphs, sentences or words.
- Set the Count (1 to 100).
- Tick Start with “Lorem ipsum” if you want the first paragraph to open with the familiar sentence. This applies to paragraph mode only.
- Click Generate. A new random text replaces the previous one each time.
- Click Copy to put the result on your clipboard. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line, so they paste cleanly into Markdown, a CMS or a code string.
How much text do you actually need?
| Component | Suggested amount | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Button or tag | 1 to 3 words | Tests wrapping and min-width. |
| Card title | 4 to 8 words | Long enough to hit a second line on mobile. |
| Meta description or excerpt | 1 sentence, or about 25 words | Matches the 155-character range you will truncate to. |
| Blog intro | 1 paragraph | Checks the drop cap, lede styling and first-line indent. |
| Article body | 5 to 8 paragraphs | Enough to scroll, test sticky headers and a table of contents. |
| Long-form stress test | 30 or more paragraphs | Reveals performance problems in editors and virtualized lists. |
Because word count drives layout, generate by words when you are matching a character limit and by paragraphs when you are testing vertical rhythm. For a quick check, 3 paragraphs is about 150 to 250 words, which is the length of a typical product description.
Where the text comes from
The passage traces back to sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. A line from it, “dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet”, was cut and scrambled by an unknown printer, and the fragment “lorem ipsum” became a typesetting standard. It was popularized in the 1960s by Letraset dry-transfer sheets and in the 1980s by Aldus PageMaker, which shipped it as default sample text. The modern 69-word version used by most generators, and by this one, starts with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.”
The reason it survived is practical: Latin letter frequencies and word lengths are close enough to English that line breaks, hyphenation and color (the typographic gray of a text block) look realistic, while the lack of meaning stops reviewers from reading the content instead of judging the design.
Alternatives and when to prefer them
- Real content. Whenever it exists, use it. Placeholder text hides the most common layout bug, which is a real headline that is twice as long as the designer assumed.
- Representative fake data. For names, prices, dates and addresses, Lorem ipsum is the wrong shape. Use a faker library or a few hand-written realistic samples.
- Translation-length tests. German runs about 30 percent longer than English and Finnish longer still; if the UI will be localized, test with text that long, not with Latin.
- Themed fillers. Bacon Ipsum, Hipster Ipsum, Cupcake Ipsum and the like are fun but make stakeholders read the words, which is exactly what you were trying to avoid.
- The CSS way. For prototypes that only need gray bars, a skeleton loader often communicates “content goes here” better than text. See the skeleton shimmer snippet.

FAQ
What is Lorem ipsum?
Scrambled pseudo-Latin filler text used in typesetting since at least the 1500s to show what a layout looks like with real-length words and sentences but no readable meaning. It is derived from a passage of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum.
How much text can I generate at once?
From 1 to 100 units. A paragraph here is 3 to 6 sentences, a sentence is 6 to 14 words, so 100 paragraphs is roughly 4,500 words, enough for stress-testing a long article template.
What does the Start with Lorem ipsum option do?
When generating paragraphs, it prefixes the first paragraph with the classic opening sentence Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, which designers recognize instantly as placeholder. It has no effect in sentence or word mode.
Is the text the same every time?
No. Words are drawn randomly from the 69-word classic passage, so each click of Generate produces different text. Copy the output if you need to reuse the exact same block.
Should I ship Lorem ipsum to production?
No. Replace it with real content before launch. Leftover placeholder text is a classic embarrassing bug, breaks accessibility and SEO, and real copy usually has different lengths that change the layout.
Does the generator use a server?
No. The text is generated in your browser with a tiny script; nothing is requested or logged.
